\section{Introduction}

This document presents the stagety for managing the PS1 IPP Cluster through
it's life-cycle which will span a peroid of approximately 3 years. The plan
covers hardware setup, validation, and operations. The life-cycle has been
broken down into three primary phases which in some cases have been decomposed
into smaller stages and steps.

\section{Life-Cycle}

\subsection{Commissioning}

In this phase the physical installation, configuration, and testing of the
cluster will be accomplished. This includes testing the functionality of the
nodes, network connectivity, management hardware, and storage media. This
phase is broken down into three discrete stages.

\subsubsection{Stage 1}

\begin{itemize}
\item 75 days (20 days slack)
\end{itemize}

This covers the installation of the nodes, the network equipment plus specing
and acquiring the cluster cabling and the management equipment. Followed by
the testing of the complete system. This stage should cover approximately 75
working days.

\paragraph{Step 1}

\begin{itemize}
\item 2 FTE, 5 days
\end{itemize}

The IPP nodes will arrive pre-installed into standard 42U racks along with 1-2
additional racks for the core switch and management equipment. The racks will
need to be unpackaged, inspected for physical damage, and positioned in the
data center. Once the racks are in their final configuration and the core
switch has been mounted, the lengths for network and management cabling will
be measured and the appropriate cabling ordered. In addition, the type
(110v/220v) and number of network managed power strips that are required will
have to be determined and ordered. There will be a slack period of
approximately one month awaiting order fulfillment.

\paragraph{Step 2}

\begin{itemize}
\item 2 FTE, 50 days
\end{itemize}

The network and console wiring will be installed and connected to the ether
the core switch or the console servers. The IPP Cluster Test Plan can then
begin.

\subsubsection{Stage 2}

\begin{itemize}
\item 0.1 FTE 50 days
\end{itemize}

The cluster enters into a period of partial dormancy where all but 6 of the
nodes are deactivated. The remaining 6 nodes are to remain available for the
testing of IPP software. The duration of this stage will vary as Stage 3 won't
begging until PS1 is almost ready to start taking data. The minimum duration
is 2.5 months.

\subsubsection{Stage 3}

The 1st lot of storage disks are ordered and the complete cluster is brought
on line and prepared for production.

\paragraph{Step 1}

Approximately 4 months before the IPP Cluster needs to be fully operational
the first lot of disks (600) shall be ordered. There will be a slack peroid
of approximately 2-3 months while the purchase is approved and deliviery is
completeled.

\paragraph{Step 2}

\begin{itemize}
\item 1 FTE, 30 days
\end{itemize}

All IPP nodes are activated and subsections x-y of the IPP Cluster Test Plan are
re-run. Concurrently the new disks will tbe mounted into drive sleds, the
disk mounting should take approximately 50 hours of labor. The 1st lot of
disks shall then be run through the IPP Storage Test Plan.

\subsection{Production}

\begin{itemize}
\item 0.5+ (weekends?) FTE
\end{itemize}

During this phase the primary activity will be hardware maintaince. This
includes replacing failed or about to fail disks, memory and other hardware
components. The cluster will need to be checked daily for disks in need of
replacement. New operating system images and software will need to be
installed on the cluster as needed. Additionaly, there will be two new lots
of disks purchased that shall be passed through the IPP Storage Test Plan.
The production phase will last approximately two years.

\subsection{End of Life}

\begin{itemize}
\item 0.15 FTE
\end{itemize}

The stacked static sky images will need to be preservated for transfer to the
PS4 IPP cluster. The static sky data shall be transfered to the 25 nodes
containing lot 3 disks. All but the 25 nodes containing lot 3 disks will be
deactivated. The deactiviated nodes shall be stored for possible reuse with
PS4. This phase will last approximate one year.
