 Given the clear distribution of detections near bright stars, I placed a cut to isolate the detections that are correlated with the bright star (log10(R) < (g*_synthcat - 10) / -7.0; g*_synthcat < 15).  This cut catches 6864 of the false detections, suggesting ~1/3 of the remaining false positives are associated with false detections around bright stars.

Taking cuts of 5 and 10 detections / arcmin^2 as the clustering threshold places 5426 and 3921 detections in clumps, respectively.
